How to measure a rug for a cleaning quote

Rug cleaning is priced by the square foot, so a quote starts with two numbers. Here is how to get them right, and what else to tell us so the estimate is close to the final price.

Measure the rug, not the label

Rugs sold as 8×10 are rarely 8 feet by 10 feet; hand‑knotted rugs are often 7'10" × 9'8" or 8'3" × 10'2". Measure the actual rug, including the fringe, along the longest dimension each way, and round to the nearest half foot. Multiply: 8 × 10 is 80 square feet; 9 × 12 is 108. At $4 to $6 per square foot (pricing page), an 8×10 is $320 to $480.

Odd shapes

Round rugs: measure the diameter and use it both ways (a 6‑foot round counts as 6×6). Ovals and runners: longest by widest. Irregular tribal or Boucherouite rugs: longest by widest, and we measure precisely at the plant.

What else to tell us

  • What kind of rug, if you know, or a photo of the back and a corner; see how to read the back.
  • Fiber, if you know: wool, silk, viscose, cotton, jute. Silk and viscose sit at the top of the range.
  • Problems: pet urine (quoted after a UV check), stains, water damage, moth damage, damaged fringe.
  • Your town, so we can schedule the route.

Estimate versus firm price

From your measurements and description we give an estimate. The firm price is set at inspection at the plant, where the rug is measured exactly and its condition seen, and it does not change after that. Multiple rugs from one house are measured and priced together.

Questions people ask us about this

Do you count the fringe?

Yes, the fringe is part of the rug and is washed and combed.

Is the estimate usually close?

Yes, when the size and fiber are right. The most common surprise is urine, which is only visible under UV.

Can you measure it for me?

Yes; every rug is measured at inspection anyway. A rough number from you just makes the estimate useful.
