The rugs we collect from Riverhead and the North Fork

The North Fork is farm country turned wine country turned weekend country, and its rugs reflect all three. The old farmhouses and village houses of Jamesport, Mattituck, Cutchogue, Southold and Orient have hooked, braided and rag rugs, inherited Persians and Chinese rugs, and the occasional very old piece; the renovated farmhouses and new weekend houses have kilims, dhurries, jute and sisal, Moroccans and Tibetans chosen by designers; Greenport village and Shelter Island Heights add Victorian houses and harbor damp; Riverhead, Calverton, Wading River and Baiting Hollow are year‑round communities with everyday and inherited rugs. Many houses are closed for the winter, and their rugs come to us in spring smelling of damp and in fall full of sand.

What goes wrong with rugs here, specifically

Closed‑house mildew. Rugs in houses shut from November to April. Full wash and controlled drying in spring.

Moth damage in wool rugs left undisturbed in closed houses. Washed out and rewoven; wash before closing the house.

Sand and salt from the Sound and bay beaches. Dusted and rinsed.

Jute and sisal browning from spills and damp. Low‑moisture only; honest about results.

Old farmhouse textiles with fragile backings. Tested first, washed by hand.

Flooding in the low‑lying bay‑side streets of Southold, Mattituck and Orient in nor'easters. Prioritized on the next route.

Route and towns

The East End route runs weekly from Farmingdale out the LIE to Riverhead and along Routes 25 and 48 to Orient, with Shelter Island by the Greenport ferry, about 60 to 90 minutes each way. Pickup is on one week's route and delivery on a later one, so allow two to three weeks door to door. Spring, when houses reopen, and October, when they close, are the busy weeks; book early. Rugs going into winter storage should be washed first.

Riverhead and the North Fork pickup questions

How long does it take from the North Fork?

Two to three weeks door to door: pickup on one weekly route, seven to ten days at the plant, delivery on a following route.

Do you pick up on Shelter Island?

Yes, via the Greenport ferry, on the weekly East End route.

Should I have rugs cleaned before closing the house for winter?

Yes. A clean, wrapped rug stored in a dry lit room will not attract moths or mildew; a soiled one in a closed house will.

Do you pick up in Wading River and Calverton?

Yes, on the same weekly route.

Can you clean the old rag rugs from a farmhouse?

If the backing and stitching are sound, yes, cool and supported. We test first and tell you.
