How to recognize a hand‑tufted rug

Turn it over: a plain cotton or synthetic fabric backing covers the whole back, hiding the pile. The rug was made by punching wool (or wool‑viscose) yarn through a stretched canvas with a tufting gun, coating the back with latex, and gluing on the scrim. There is no knotting.
