Tapestry weave and stitched canvas, washed flat and blocked

Aubusson and needlepoint rug cleaning on Long Island

Aubusson rugs are flat tapestry weaves; needlepoint rugs are wool stitched through canvas. Both are French‑style floral pieces, both are made today mostly in China and India, and both distort badly if washed and dried carelessly. At Farmingdale they are dye‑tested, hand‑washed flat, and blocked square as they dry. Free pickup across Nassau and Suffolk.

At Green Choice Oriental Rug Cleaning Long Island, every Aubusson is cleaned inside our own plant at 44 Executive Blvd, Farmingdale, never on your floor, and never sent out to anyone else.

How to recognize an Aubusson or needlepoint

An Aubusson is a flat tapestry weave (like a kilim, but with curvilinear designs) in wool on a cotton or wool warp, usually a pastel floral medallion with garlands and a scrolling border; genuine antique French Aubussons are rare and valuable, and modern ones are woven in China. A needlepoint rug is wool yarn stitched in tent or cross stitch through a cotton canvas, thicker and stiffer than an Aubusson, in similar floral designs; most modern examples are Chinese or Indian. Both are common in formal dining rooms and bedrooms in Garden City, Rockville Centre, Manhasset, Old Westbury, Hewlett, Huntington and Southampton.

Aubusson & needlepoint rug cleaning questions

Why is my needlepoint rug wavy at the edges?

The canvas shrank unevenly after a floor cleaning. Washing flat and blocking during drying corrects most of it.

Can an Aubusson be washed?

Yes, flat, cool and by hand, then blocked. Immersion and floor cleaning distort it.

How much does it cost?

$4 to $6 per square foot; about $400 to $480 for an 8×10.

Do you clean antique French Aubussons?

Yes, under the antique process, with a condition report on request.

How long does it take?

Ten to fourteen days.
