How to recognize an Afghan rug
Traditional Afghan rugs are Turkoman in origin: asymmetric‑knotted wool on a wool foundation, in deep madder red with rows of octagonal guls (Bokhara, Ersari, Beshir) or, in Khal Mohammadi and Kunduz rugs, a dense, glossy, closely clipped pile in dark red and navy. Since the 1990s Afghanistan (and Afghan weavers in Pakistan) has also produced the Chobi, Ziegler and "Peshawar" rugs: hand‑spun wool, vegetable or vegetable‑look dyes, soft faded colors, Oushak and Mahal designs, often given an antique‑finish wash. Afghan war rugs, with tanks and helicopters woven into the design, are a small collector category.
Turkoman Afghans are in older Long Island homes in Garden City, Rockville Centre, the Five Towns and Huntington; Chobis are in newer ones in Roslyn, Manhasset, Port Washington, Dix Hills and the Hamptons.
