What a pad does for a rug

A rug on a bare floor is ground between the foot above and the floor below with every step; the knots wear from underneath and the foundation cracks. A pad absorbs that, and on hardwood it also stops the rug sliding, creeping and bunching. On carpet it stops the rug wrinkling and walking across the room. A pad lifts the rug so a vacuum can pull air through it, which is what actually removes dry soil between plant washes. And a pad is the cheapest insurance against a fall on a slippery runner.

The wrong pad is worse than none. Thin PVC waffle pads from home stores off‑gas plasticizers that permanently discolor polyurethane floor finishes, and they disintegrate into crumbs within a few years. We remove a great many of them from Garden City, Manhasset, Huntington and Smithtown floors.

Pads we supply

Felt with natural‑rubber face, ¼ inch: the standard for hand‑knotted rugs on hardwood, tile and stone. Dense, cushioning, non‑slip, floor‑safe.

Thin natural rubber, ⅛ inch: for kilims, dhurries, flatweaves and thin rugs where grip matters more than cushion.

Rug‑on‑carpet pad: a firm pad with a carpet‑grip face.

Dense felt, ⅜ inch: for heavy rugs that need flattening (Heriz, Bidjar, big Oushaks) and for rooms where cushion is wanted.

Every pad is cut about an inch inside the rug's edges so it never shows and the edges taper to the floor.

The rug is measured at inspection; rugs are rarely perfectly rectangular, so the pad is cut to the actual shape.

Felt‑rubber, thin rubber, carpet‑grip or dense felt, chosen for the rug, the floor and the room; we advise.

Cut about an inch inside the rug's edges at the plant.

Protect (optional)

A wool‑safe fiber protector applied to the clean, dry rug and allowed to cure.

Deliver and lay

On delivery the old pad is removed, the floor checked, the new pad laid and the rug laid over it in place.

Priced by the square foot

Padding is priced per square foot of pad by type, and quoted with your rug at inspection. Fiber protection is priced per square foot of rug. Both are optional and both are inexpensive relative to the rug they protect.

Which pad for hardwood?

A dense felt pad with a natural‑rubber non‑slip face for most rugs; a thin rubber pad for thin flatweaves and kilims that need grip more than cushion. Never a cheap PVC waffle pad, which sticks to and discolors floors.

Which pad over wall‑to‑wall carpet?

A firm felt or synthetic pad with a grip face designed for carpet, which stops the rug wrinkling and walking.

My old pad is crumbling. Should I replace it?

Yes; disintegrating pad is usually PVC or old rubber, and it damages the floor and does nothing for the rug. It also holds urine and odor.

What is fiber protection?

A wool‑safe protector applied after washing that makes spills bead for blotting instead of soaking in immediately. It is useful on ivory rugs and in dining rooms; it is not a force field.

Does the pad need replacing after a urine treatment?

Almost always; the pad has absorbed urine and cannot be cleaned effectively.
