How to recognize a synthetic rug
The back is very regular, with straight rows and a stiff synthetic or jute backing; the label says polypropylene, olefin, nylon, polyester or "PET." Fibers are uniform and slightly plasticky to the touch. These are the rugs from Target, Wayfair, Costco and the big‑box home stores, in every design from faux‑Persian to Moroccan‑style shag, and they are in kitchens, playrooms, basements and rentals in every town on Long Island.
Polypropylene cannot absorb water‑based dye, so juice and wine wipe off; but it is oleophilic, so cooking oil, skin oil and street oil bond to it and grab soil. Nylon and polyester absorb a little more and can hold some stains. All three tolerate warmer water and a degreaser than wool can.
