Undyed ivory wool that shows everything, and holds everything

Beni Ourain rug cleaning on Long Island

The ivory Beni Ourain with its black lattice is in more new Long Island living rooms than any other rug, and it is the hardest‑working sand trap we clean. At Farmingdale they are dusted twice, washed cold with a non‑bleach brightening rinse, rinsed until clear and dried slowly with the pile groomed. Free pickup across Nassau and Suffolk.

At Green Choice Oriental Rug Cleaning Long Island, every Beni Ourain is cleaned inside our own plant at 44 Executive Blvd, Farmingdale, never on your floor, and never sent out to anyone else.

How to recognize a Beni Ourain

A genuine Beni Ourain is hand‑knotted by Berber weavers in the Middle Atlas from undyed ivory sheep's wool, with a thick, shaggy pile 1 to 2 inches deep and a sparse lattice or diamond design in natural dark brown or black wool. The foundation is wool, the ends usually finished with a braided or fringed edge, and the sizes are generous. Reproductions from India ("Moroccan style" hand‑knotted or tufted wool) and machine‑made polypropylene shags from big‑box stores look similar from across the room and are cleaned well but handled differently.

We collect Beni Ourains from Huntington, Northport, Cold Spring Harbor, Roslyn, Manhasset, Port Washington, Garden City, Rockville Centre, Long Beach, Merrick and Massapequa, and from beach houses in Westhampton, Southampton, Sag Harbor, East Hampton and Montauk, where they collect sand by the pound.

What we find on Beni Ourain rugs

Yellowing from lanolin, residue and urine; mostly reversible.

Sand by the pound. Five to ten pounds from a room‑size rug is normal.

Pet urine, visible under UV and smellable every July.

Flattened, matted pile from hot floor cleaning.

Moth damage; undyed wool is the moths' favorite.

Worn braided ends.

How Green Choice cleans a Beni Ourain at 44 Executive Blvd

The Beni Ourain process is the Moroccan process at full strength: two dustings, a brightening rinse, extra rinse cycles and slow groomed drying.

1

Inspection and UV check

Genuine Berber or reproduction identified; urine mapped under UV, which shows vividly on ivory wool. Firm price approved.

2

Double dusting

Face‑down through the dusting machine, rested, turned, dusted again. The second pass brings out as much as the first.

3

Cold wash with brightening rinse

Cool water, neutral wool solution, then a non‑bleach brightening rinse that lifts lanolin yellowing. Urine rugs soaked first. Pile worked with the grain by hand.

4

Rinse, then rinse again

Extra cycles until completely clear; residue is what makes an ivory rug turn yellow and sticky later.

5

Centrifuge and slow groomed dry

Spun, then dried flat and slowly with the pile raked and groomed several times so it comes back soft and standing.

Beni Ourain rug cleaning questions

Will the yellow come out?

Lanolin, residue and urine yellowing come out with the brightening rinse and a clear rinse. Sun‑yellowing at the edges is permanent.

Do you use bleach on ivory rugs?

No. Bleach damages wool and yellows again within months. The brightener is non‑chlorine and wool‑safe.

How much sand is really in it?

Five to ten pounds from a room‑size rug in a beach‑area house is normal. It sits under the pile where a vacuum never reaches.

How much does it cost?

$4 to $6 per square foot; about $320 to $480 for an 8×10.

How long does it take?

Seven to twelve days; the deep pile dries slowly.
