Days matter: bleed, mildew and rot all start within a week
A rug that has been in a flooded basement, under a burst pipe or a washing‑machine overflow needs to be washed within days, not weeks. Dyes begin to migrate in the first day, mildew grows within three, and a foundation left wet for a week can dry‑rot. At Green Choice Oriental Rug Cleaning Long Island, water‑damaged rugs get same‑week pickup across Nassau and Suffolk and go to the front of the line at the Farmingdale plant.
Get my quote How it worksWithin hours, a wet wool rug's dyes start to move, especially reds and navies on ivory. Within two or three days in a Long Island basement in summer, mildew starts on the back and the rug begins to smell. Within a week, the cotton foundation, kept wet, starts to lose its strength; that is dry rot, and it is permanent. A rug that has been flooded and then dried slowly in place is often stiff, smelly, bled and cracking by the time someone thinks to call.
The good news is that most of it is preventable and much of it is reversible if the rug gets to the plant quickly. We see this after every major rain on the South Shore and in the beach communities, and after every winter pipe burst in the North Shore houses, and the outcome depends almost entirely on how many days pass before the wash.
Clean water (pipe, appliance, rain through a window): washed normally with a stabilizer, dried fast. Excellent results if caught early.
Grey water (washing machine, dishwasher, sump overflow): washed with a sanitizing step; good results.
Black water (sewage, storm surge, standing flood water): assessed case by case. Wool rugs of value can often be sanitized and washed; low‑value rugs and jute or sisal rugs are usually not worth it and we say so. Everything is documented for insurance.
Fast, controlled drying is what stops mildew and rot after a flood.
Speed first: same‑week pickup, immediate assessment, and the wash brought forward ahead of routine work.
Same‑week pickup anywhere in Nassau and Suffolk; we carry the rug out of the basement ourselves, rolled, and get it to the plant.
Foundation tested for rot, dyes tested for movement, contamination category noted, everything photographed and written up for you and your insurer. Firm price approved.
Grey and black water rugs get a sanitizing wash; all rugs get a dye‑stabilizing cold wash to stop and reverse migration.
Full immersion, bleed correction where needed, rinsed until clear and odor‑free.
Centrifuge, then the drying room with strong air movement so the rug is dry in a day or two rather than a week, which is what prevents mildew and rot from restarting.
Flood pickups come from every town but cluster in the South Shore and the beach communities after storms: Long Beach, Island Park, Oceanside, Baldwin, Freeport, Merrick, Bellmore, Seaford, Massapequa, Lindenhurst, Babylon, West Islip, Bay Shore, Sayville and Patchogue; and from the Hamptons and North Fork after nor'easters. Pipe‑burst rugs come from everywhere. Say "water damage" when you book and the pickup is prioritized.
Drop‑offs welcome any day; call ahead and you can watch the dye test.
from $4/sq ft + sanitizing
Clean‑water rugs are washed at the standard $4 to $6 per square foot with a stabilizer included. Sanitizing for grey and black water, bleed correction and any foundation stabilization are quoted at assessment. You receive photographs, a condition report and an itemized invoice for insurance.
Get it off the wet floor, unroll it flat somewhere dry, lift it onto something so air reaches the back, and call us. Do not fold it, do not put it in the sun, do not run a heater on it, and do not try to wash it in a driveway.
Usually, if it is washed within a week or so and the foundation has not rotted. Clean water damage is the easiest; sewage‑contaminated rugs need a sanitizing wash and are assessed case by case.
Not necessarily; bleed correction after a stabilizing wash recovers much of a recent bleed. The sooner the rug is washed, the more comes back.
Often; we provide photographs, a written condition report and an itemized invoice for your claim. We are not able to advise on coverage.
Yes, and we bring the rug up ourselves. Tell us when you book so the right crew comes.
