Oushak rug cleaning on Long Island

Oushak rugs are the large, soft, pastel Turkish rugs in half the designer living rooms on Long Island, and their loosely spun wool and tea‑washed colors need the gentlest full wash we do. At Farmingdale they are dye‑tested in several places, dusted gently, washed cold at low agitation and dried with the pile brushed one way. Free pickup across Nassau and Suffolk.

At Green Choice Oriental Rug Cleaning Long Island, every Oushak rug is cleaned inside our own plant at 44 Executive Blvd, Farmingdale, never on your floor, and never sent out to anyone else.

How to recognize an Oushak

Oushak (Uşak) is in western Turkey, and its rugs use the symmetric knot at low density, 30 to 80 per square inch, with a long, lustrous, loosely spun wool pile on a cotton or wool foundation. Antique Oushaks (pre‑1930) have large‑scale medallion or all‑over designs in apricot, gold, terracotta, green and ivory. Modern Oushaks, woven since the 1990s in Turkey and, in very large numbers, in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan in the Oushak style, are similar in look and softer still, and almost all are tea‑washed or overdyed to mute the colors. Sizes are big: 9×12 is a small one.

We collect Oushaks weekly from Manhasset, Sands Point, Roslyn, Old Westbury, Locust Valley, Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, Huntington Bay and the Hamptons, and increasingly from Garden City, Rockville Centre and Merrick as well.

What we find on Oushak rugs

Tea wash running. The tint that gives a modern Oushak its "antique" look comes out in warm water and leaves blotches. Tested in several places and washed cold with a stabilizer.

Felting and matting. Loose wool locks up when agitated wet. Low agitation, a centrifuge and directional grooming prevent it.

Enormous soil load. The open pile of a 10×14 Oushak from a house with children and a dog holds six to eight pounds of dry soil.

Urine on ivory fields. Soak before wash.

Shedding, which is normal and unrelated to cleaning.

How Green Choice cleans an Oushak at 44 Executive Blvd

The Oushak process is the Turkish process at its gentlest: everything cold, everything low‑agitation, and grooming as it dries.

1

Multi‑point dye test

Tested in at least three places on the field and border because tea wash is uneven. UV check. Firm price approved.

2

Gentle dusting

Low setting, several passes; loose wool must not be beaten.

3

Cold low‑agitation wash with stabilizer

Cool water, neutral wool solution, stabilizer. Soft brush in one direction only, never circles. Urine rugs soaked first.

4

Rinse until clear

Extended flushing; the open pile holds detergent.

5

Centrifuge and directional groomed dry

Spun, then dried flat with the pile brushed one way repeatedly so it dries lustrous and separated.

Oushak repairs

  • End and selvedge repair in soft matched wool.
  • Reweaving of moth damage, common in Hamptons houses closed over winter.
  • Dense felt padding to stop creeping.

Oushak rug cleaning questions

Will the muted colors change?

The tea wash is tested and stabilized so it stays. What does change is the grey cast from soil, which comes out and makes the colors look softer and cleaner, not brighter.

Why is my Oushak matted in the walkway?

Soft wool locked together by moisture and pressure. A cold wash, centrifuge and directional drying separate it again.

How much does Oushak cleaning cost?

$4 to $6 per square foot; about $560 to $840 for a 10×14.

Is my Oushak Turkish or Indian?

Most modern "Oushaks" are woven in India, Pakistan or Afghanistan in the Oushak style. It does not change the cleaning; it can change the value.

Do you pick up in the Hamptons?

Yes, weekly, with two technicians.
