How to recognize a Bidjar

Fold the corner: a Bidjar barely bends. The wet‑beaten wefts pack the symmetric knots so tightly that the rug feels like a board, and it cannot be folded without damage, only rolled. Designs are herati (fish) all‑overs, medallions, and Mina Khani florals in red, navy, ivory and rust; some have a distinctive "Bidjar blue." The pile is thick, hard wool on a cotton (older: wool) foundation, 80 to 200 knots per square inch. Room sizes and long runners are common.

Cracked foundation from folding. A Bidjar folded for moving or storage cracks along the fold, and the cracks show as lines of lost pile. We roll, never fold, and secure cracked areas before washing.

Surface soil, deep soil. The density keeps most grit near the surface, but what does get in is very hard to shift, and a wand does not touch it.

Incomplete drying. A Bidjar cleaned on a floor can stay damp in the foundation for a week and mildew from the back. It needs a centrifuge and a drying room.
