Where the urine actually is
When a dog or cat urinates on a rug, most of the liquid passes straight through the pile into the foundation and the pad, and often into the floor beneath. The water evaporates; the urea, uric acid and salts stay behind as crystals in the cotton warps. Wool holds some of it too. A UV light shows the true extent: a stain the size of a hand on the surface is often the size of a dinner plate in the foundation.
Every enzyme spray, home carpet shampoo and truck‑mount cleaning works on the surface. The crystals in the foundation are untouched, which is why the smell returns, first faintly, then with every humid day. Meanwhile the alkaline salts are slowly breaking down the dyes around the stain, which is why urine‑stained areas so often bleed when a rug is finally washed by someone who did not check for urine first.
The fix is a soak. The whole rug is submerged in a decontamination bath that dissolves the crystals, then washed and rinsed until the water runs clear. This is done every week at the Farmingdale plant for rugs from every town in Nassau and Suffolk, and it is the single most common reason a rug comes to us.
