How to recognize a Qom

Qom rugs are asymmetric‑knotted at 400 to 1,000 knots per square inch. The famous ones are all silk, pile and foundation, with a sheen that shifts as you walk around them and designs that range from medallions and hunting scenes to pictorial and garden compositions, frequently signed. Wool Qoms use kork wool on a cotton or silk foundation, often with silk highlights, in similar designs. Sizes are mostly small: 2×3 mats, 3×5, 4×6 and 5×7, with room sizes rare and costly.

Long Island Qoms are usually silk, usually bought abroad or inherited, and usually hanging on a wall or lying in a low‑traffic room in Great Neck, Kings Point, Roslyn, Old Westbury, Lloyd Harbor or Southampton.

What we find on Qom rugs

Silk dulled and stiffened by a carpet cleaner. The most common reason a Qom comes to us.

Water rings from a blotted spill.

Dye movement in reds, purples and blacks after warm cleaning.

Distortion from being hung wet or dried on a floor.

Dust, not dirt. Wall‑hung Qoms are rarely soiled but are dusty; gentle dusting alone transforms them.

How Green Choice cleans a Qom at 44 Executive Blvd

Silk Qoms follow the silk process end to end: by hand, cool, flat. Wool Qoms get the gentlest immersion wash we do, with silk highlights handled by hand.

1

Fiber and dye test

Burn test confirms silk or wool. Every color tested for longer than wool rugs. Signature noted. Firm price and method approved.

2

Gentle dusting

Low setting or compressed air; silk pile is never beaten.

3

Flat hand wash or gentle immersion

Silk: laid flat, cool water, neutral silk solution, soft sponge with the pile. Wool Qom: short cool immersion, soft brush, sponge over silk.

4

Hand rinse

Cool water until clear; blotting for silk, brief spin for wool.

5

Cool flat dry and hand finishing

Dried flat under gentle tension away from heat; pile brushed by hand to restore sheen; fringes straightened.

Qom repairs

  • Fringe replacement in silk or cotton.
  • Blocking distorted pieces.
  • Bleed correction where the dye allows.
  • Condition reports for insurance.

Qom rug cleaning questions

Is water safe on a silk Qom?

Cool water, neutral solution, flat, by hand: yes. Immersion, heat, agitation and wringing: no. The silk process is built around this.

My Qom hangs on the wall. Does it need cleaning?

It needs dusting every few years and a hand wash when it looks dull; wall‑hung silk collects dust that greys the sheen.

How much does Qom cleaning cost?

$4 to $6 per square foot; about $130 to $145 for a 4×6 silk piece.

How long does it take?

Ten to fourteen days for silk.

Do you provide a condition report?

Yes, on request, with photographs.
